As the seasonal weather shifts and we finally welcome some much-needed moisture back into the ground, many of us are stepping outside to inspect our outdoor spaces. If your once-lush green lawn has survived a punishing dry spell only to look tired and disappointingly patchy, you aren’t alone.

Drought takes a heavy toll on grass. While established lawns can enter a state of dormancy to protect themselves, prolonged dry weather often results in dead grass patches, compaction and bare soil.

The good news? Mother Nature’s cooperative autumn weather provides the ideal window for turf recovery. With a little bit of elbow grease and the right approach to overseeding, you can completely transform your tired lawn. Here is your step-by-step guide to repairing a patchy lawn, backed by the expert blends here at South West Seeds.

Step 1: Mowing Low (The Haircut)

Before you do any heavy lifting, give your lawn a short trim, often referred to as mowing low. Lowering your mower blades slightly below your normal cutting height helps expose the soil surface, letting light reach those struggling areas and clearing away dead, brittle grass debris. Just make sure not to scalp the lawn entirely; you want to remove the excess thatch without tearing the healthy roots out.

Step 2: Scarifying (Removing the Thatch)

Over the summer, dead grass, moss and organic matter (known as thatch) build up into a dense mat that blocks water, air and nutrients from reaching the soil.

  • Use a spring-tine rake (for smaller lawns) or a mechanical scarifier (for larger areas) to vigorously scratch through the turf surface.
  • Pull up the dead material and moss. It might look a little sparse and messy once you’re done, but this crucial step opens up the breathing space required for new grass seed to make direct contact with the soil.

Step 3: Aerating (Opening Up Compacted Soil)

Drought turns ground hard like concrete, sealing off roots from essential oxygen and moisture. To reverse this compaction, aerate your lawn.

  • For standard gardens, a garden fork pushed 4 to 6 inches deep every few inches will do the trick. For larger spaces, a hollow-tine aerator is even better.
  • Wiggle the fork slightly as you pull it out to fracture the compacted subsoil. This allows air, water and future nutrients to penetrate deep down where the roots need them most.

Step 4: Leveling (Smoothing Out the Bumps)

Uneven lawns make mowing frustrating and can cause water to pool or run off unevenly. Once you’ve scarified and aerated, fill in small dips, hollows and ruts with a quality top-dressing mix (a blend of fine sand, loam, and well-rotted organic compost). Rake it flat across the surface so that the surrounding grass blades are still partially visible.

Step 5: Overseeding the Patches (Choosing the Right Seed)

This is where the magic happens. Broadcasting fresh seed over your existing lawn (overseeding) will thicken up sparse areas and crowd out future weeds. However, not all grass seed is created equal, different areas of your garden face unique micro-climates.

To take the guesswork out of your project, we recommend using our all-in-one Fast Recovery Lawn Pack, which takes care of everything you need for a rapid turnaround. Alternatively, if you want to target specific problem zones in your garden, match your patches to our specialised mixtures:

  • For Shaded Corners & Under Trees: If your drought-stressed patches are beneath tree canopies or next to fences, ordinary grass will struggle. Use our ShadeGreen Lawn Seed, specifically bred to be shade-tolerant and resilient.
  • For Coastal Gardens: If harsh winds and salt spray compounded the drought damage near the coast, look to our CoastalGreen Lawn Seed, designed for exceptional salt tolerance and erosion control.
  • For High-Traffic Family Lawns: If kids and pets have worn paths straight through the turf, use our ultra-resilient Hard-Wearing Lawn Seed (ToughGreen).
  • For a Show-Stopping Finish: If you want a pristine, high-end look across the entire garden, opt for our Premium Lawn Seed.
  • Looking for a complete makeover? Check out our comprehensive Lawn Transformation Pack for an effortless, professional-grade overhaul.

Tip: Scatter the seed evenly by hand or using a spreader across the bare patches and thin zones, then lightly rake it into the top layer of soil.

Step 6: Adding Fertiliser and Watering

New seedlings need a nutritional boost to establish deep roots quickly. Apply a balanced pre-seeding or autumn lawn fertiliser to supply vital nutrients like phosphorus and potassium. To give your new growth the ultimate boost, we recommend using one of our targeted growth-enhancers:

For an extra stress-busting tonic, apply our 500ml Organic Seaweed Liquid Biostimulant

For deep root establishment, use our Mycorrhizal Pre-Seeding Fertiliser (8-13-12)

For sustained, balanced nutrition, try our Granular Biostimulant Fertiliser (10-2-10)

Finally, water gently but consistently. Keep the newly seeded areas moist with a fine spray from a hose or sprinkler daily (unless there’s steady rainfall) until the grass shoots are well-established, usually around 2 to 4 weeks. Avoid heavy foot traffic on the patched areas until the new grass has been mowed at least once.
