We might enjoy a good heatwave here in the UK, but our lawns usually don’t. With hosepipe bans in place, there’s often little you can do to stop your grass from turning dry, patchy, and pale.
But don’t worry — with the right care and a little overseeding, your lawn can bounce back. Our Lawn Transformation Pack has everything you need to revive and refresh your grass after the summer heat.
After extreme heat, it’s best to wait for temperatures to drop and rainfall to return. In the UK, early autumn (September–October) offers warm soil and milder air—perfect for seed germination without the stress of summer heat.
Start by mowing your lawn shorter than usual and use a rake to remove any dead grass or thatch, as weeds and moss can pose challenges when over-seeding. This will help to expose the bare soil and create space for new grass to take root.
Give your garden fork a good workout—or use an aerator—to puncture compacted soil. Improved drainage and better seed-to-soil contact help seedlings flourish.
Use our specialised pre-seeding fertiliser rich in phosphorus (and slow-release nitrogen ensures steady growth without overfeeding). This nourishes newly sown seeds without encouraging weeds or burnt patches. Avoid applying during hot weather or long periods of drought. For best results, use a spreader for even coverage.
Sprinkle our Hardwearing Grass Seed at a reduced rate—around 15–25 g per m². You can apply the seed directly to the area that needs attention by hand. Make sure to work the seed into the sward using a light rake or brush.
A light layer (2–4 kg per m²) of sandy loam or fine compost helps seal seeds into the soil, smooths uneven spots, and enhances drainage.
During the first two weeks, keep the soil moist—water daily for about 5 minutes, ideally in the morning or evening. Do not apply too much water or create puddles, as this could lead to seed rot. After seedlings emerge, reduce frequency but water deeply to encourage root development.
Once your seedlings have established, apply our Bio-stimulant liquid using a watering can or sprayer. Try to limit foot traffic and keep pets off the lawn for at least 24 hours to allow the fertiliser to absorb fully. Re-apply every 2–4 weeks during the growing season.
Avoid cutting or walking on the lawn until the new grass reaches about 3–4 inches tall. Then mow on the highest setting, trimming just a third off the height. Ensure your mower blades are nice and sharp, this helps with a nice clean cut.
Once established, use our Granular Bio-stimulant fertiliser as your ongoing lawn care product. This will strengthen root systems and improve stress resistance whilst also promoting a thick, lush turf with vibrant green colour. You can then return to a routine of mowing, occasional feeding, and overseeing any thin or damaged areas the following autumn or spring.
